Four Days Marches Nijmegen 2010

On July the 20th 2010 was the start of the 94ste Four Days Marches Nijmegen. I wanted to walk this year, together with my father. I had done several good training marches. Sadly, on the last training I developed an injury, shin splints. Things were looking grim for my ambition of bringing the 4×50 km to a good end.

3 a.m. tuesdaynight, I arrived at the start. This is one hour earlier than normal, because of the hot weather predictions. I had decided to walk very slowly from the start, hoping that this would avoid more strain on my shin. Unfortunately this strategy didn’t work and I soon realised that completing the full 200 km this way would be crazy. Still, it is hard to decide when to really quit. Somehow you keep hoping that things will get better. But after 15 km I had come to the final conclusion that this was enough, and I entered the broom wagon…

The one advantage to my misfortune was that it would give me time to make a photo impression of the Four Days Marches. Bellow you can see several photos I made at the last three days.

Yesterday, I’ve accompanied a friend to National Skydive Center Teuge. He loves jumping out of a flying airplane, but I prefer to keep my feet on solid ground. So I took the opportunity to make a photo series about the event. Although I would have loved to join on the airplane to take some shots of the exit…

Hoek van Holland

Last sunday, it looked like there was going to be an interesting sunset. It rained a bit during the day, but in the evening the sky was clear with an occasional cloud. It seemed a good idea to go to Hoek van Holland to try and make a good sunset photo. I think I was succesful, because I have two.

The sun was low and had disappeared behind a cloud. For the first shot I choose a piece of driftwood as a foreground element. Because of the slightly longer shutterspeed I managed to show movement in the water, which for me adds to the photo. The build up of the wave in the distance and the ship on the horizon are also key elements to give some depth to the photo. All these parts combined make this a good shot for me!

The subject in the second shot is the ship on the horizon. The sky seems to be on fire because of the red and orange. What I really like in this photo is the reflection of the colors in the foreground. That is what makes me very happy with the endresult.
